How to write a SMART goal for the success of your company

Defining SMART marketing goals is probably one of the most difficult tasks for business leaders. Goals determine priorities for each team, help make company results measurable, and serve as a guide for company growth.

We know how important it is to have well-defined objectives, but how to identify them? If these objectives are not aligned with the reality of the company, they become useless.

This is why it is critical to define SMART goals. The SMART feature was born from the acronym that refers to the 5 basic characteristics that each goal must have to be considered a smart goal:

  • Specific: What do you want to achieve in your area of interest?
  • Measurable: What KPIs or indicators can be used to measure your efficiency?
  • Attainable: Is the goal reasonable?
  • Relevant: Why is your company or customers interested?
  • Time-related: When do you have to achieve this goal?

Here are a few examples of how to write a SMART goal. We hope that these examples will serve as a reference for you to start working on your goals in a strategic, precise, and actionable way:

Goal 1

  • SMART goal: Increase visits to your website by 50% (from 1,000 to 1,500) in the next 30 days, doubling content distribution and preparing for the launch of your new product.
    • S: increase visits to your website by 50%
    • M: 50% (from 1,000 to 1,500).
    • A: duplicating content distribution.
    • R: prepare for the launch of your new product.
    • T: in the next 30 days.

Goal 2

  • SMART Goal: Increase sales by 20% ($200,000 to $240,000) in the next 12 months by offering your new products to existing customers.
    • S: increase sales by 20%
    • M: 20% (from $200.000 to $240.000)
    • A: offering your new products to existing customers.
    • R: customer retention and increased sales.
    • T: 12 months.

Goal 3

  • SMART goal: Grow the marketing team by 10% (from 100 to 110 employees) by the end of the first quarter of next year. Hiring 3 employees every 3 months to complete the content creation team.
    • S: Grow the marketing team by 10%
    • M: 10% (from 100 to 110 employees)
    • A: hiring 3 employees every 3 months.
    • R: complete the content creation team.
    • T: by the end of the first quarter of next year.
